Dan Spencer uses the Theory of Constraints to compare music school ($80K-$200K, 4 years) with building a game music portfolio from home. The 4M Protocol (Make, Mix, Master, Market) helps aspiring game composers identify their bottleneck and focus on it. Music school provides structure and networking but does not guarantee game-ready releases or credits. The portfolio-first path targets the release constraint directly, with Guild members averaging 72.2 days to first release. School makes sense mainly for the college experience or funded options.
